This illustration appears on page 8 of Devil's Whip #4 (1907). The title, "The Council of the Industrialists of the Black Stone," and the names of the cities Chiatura and Kutaisi written below the scale, give an indication of picture's meaning. The left-hand side of the scale illustrates Chiatura, a city in western Georgia, famous for its manganese reserves. The man standing on the right-hand side of the scale is Georgii Zdanovich (1855-1917) the president of the “council of the industrialists of the black stone,” who was born in Kutaisi. He was an important public figure in the early 20th century whose achievements are primarily connected with the manganese industry and the development of the city of Chiatura, including building roads, bridges, schools, libraries and other important institutions. Also, starting in 1907 (when this issue of the journal was published) he brought electricity to the city. Judging by the positioning of Chiatura and Zdanovich, we can infer that the image represents how Zdanovich helped Chiatura to ‘rise up' and develop.
