The first issue of Slingshot is a fictional student’s diary featuring a series of satirical poems and caricatures depicting a typical day at school.

There’s no end to the lessons! The fourth caricature in the series illustrates a painting lesson. But who cares about painting? Studying all day long is boring, the poet complains, and sometimes students need to have a bit of fun. Here, some of them play music while the others dance. Although they always invite their teacher to join in, he never does. (The teacher, by the way, bears a striking resemblance to Schmerling himself.)
